Covonia Sore Throat Spray provides fast, dual-action relief for painful sore throats. It numbs pain with lidocaine while chlorhexidine helps fight infection. Sugar-free, suitable for vegetarians, vegans, and coeliacs.

Description

 

Who is it Suitable For?

  • Adults and children aged 12 years and over.
  • Suitable for vegetarians, vegans, coeliacs, and diabetics (sugar-free).
  • Not recommended for children under 12 unless advised by a doctor.

 

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

  • Active substances:
    • Chlorhexidine gluconate 0.2% w/v (antiseptic to fight infection)
    • Lidocaine hydrochloride monohydrate 0.05% w/v (local anaesthetic to numb pain)
  • Other ingredients: Citric acid (E330), glycerol (E422), saccharin sodium (E954), menthol, eucalyptol, ethanol, purified water.
  • Dietary properties: Free from sugar, nuts, artificial flavours, artificial colours.

 

How to Use / Dosage Instructions

  • Adults and children over 12 years: Spray 3–5 times per application, repeat 6–10 times per day.
  • Children under 12 years: Do not use unless directed by a doctor.

How to administer:

  1. Turn the spray tube upright.
  2. Point the nozzle to the back of the throat.
  3. Press the spray button to release.
  4. After use, turn the tube down to close.

If the nozzle becomes blocked, detach and rinse in hot water before reuse.

Duration of use:

  • Use only for a few days at a time. If symptoms persist for more than 2 days, seek medical advice.

 

Possible Side Effects

  • Common: Burning or stinging sensation, taste changes, mild tongue or tooth discolouration.
  • Rare: Allergic reactions such as skin rash, swelling of lips/tongue, wheezing, dizziness, or collapse.
  • Very rare: Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis).

Stop use immediately and seek urgent medical help if severe reactions occur.

 

Warnings and Precautions

  • Do not use if you:
    • Are allergic to chlorhexidine, lidocaine, or other local anaesthetics.
    • Have difficulty swallowing.
    • Are under 12 years of age.
  • Speak to your doctor before use if you:
    • Have a history of severe allergies.
    • Have had a sore throat for more than 2 days with fever, headache, nausea, or vomiting.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Only use if advised by your doctor. Lidocaine may pass into breast milk in small amounts.

Driving and machinery: No known effects, but dizziness from allergic reactions may occur.

 

Interactions with Other Medicines

Talk to your doctor before use if you are taking:

  • Beta blockers or heart medicines (e.g. propranolol, mexiletine)
  • Ulcer medicines (e.g. cimetidine)
  • Diuretics
  • Epilepsy treatments (e.g. phenytoin, barbiturates)

 

When to Consult a Pharmacist or Doctor

  • If your sore throat lasts more than 2 days.
  • If you have a high fever alongside sore throat.
  • If you develop breathing difficulties, rash, or swelling.

 

Storage Information

  • Store below 25°C.
  • Keep out of sight and reach of children.
  • Do not use after the expiry date on the pack.

Pre-1960s

Covonia Bronchial Balsam was initially formulated and produced by Huddersfield chemist, S.T. Shaw. As sales increased, Mr Shaw contracted Thornton & Ross to produce Covonia

1968

Covonia, now owned by Thornton & Ross, is first licensed under the Medicines Act to start selling cough and cold remedies. The nation starts to Feel the Power of Covonia

1970s – 1990s

Covonia’s popularity rises, particularly among consumers looking for a no-nonsense remedy for coughs and colds

1997

Covonia launches its first new product for almost 50 years, Covonia Expectorant. In 1998, it launches its Night-Time Formula too

1999

The iconic Covonia bull, ‘Stan’, is introduced and makes his debut on UK TV screens
