Who is Lactulose Solution suitable for?
Lactulose Solution is suitable for adults, the elderly, and children aged 1 year and over. It may also be prescribed for infants under 1 year on medical advice. It is especially helpful for individuals who suffer from chronic constipation or require softened stools due to medical conditions such as haemorrhoids or following rectal surgery.
Ingredients / Active Ingredients
Each 5ml of Lactulose Solution contains:
- Active ingredient: Lactulose 3.3g
- Other ingredients: Galactose, lactose, and purified water
Lactulose is a type of sugar not absorbed by the body, allowing it to work in the bowel to draw in water and soften the stool.
How to Use / Dosage Instructions
Dosage by Age Group
- Adults and adolescents over 14 years: 15–45ml daily, adjusted to 15–30ml once stools become regular
- Children 7–14 years: 15ml daily
- Children 1–6 years: 5–10ml daily
- Infants under 1 year: Up to 5ml daily (only on medical advice)
How often to take it
Take once daily, preferably at the same time each day. If needed, this may be divided into two smaller doses.
How to administer
Lactulose is an oral liquid. It may be taken neat or diluted with water, fruit juice, or milk.
Duration of use
Continue use until normal bowel movements are achieved. Long-term use should be under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
Possible Side Effects
Lactulose is generally well tolerated. However, some individuals may experience:

- Bloating or wind (especially at the start of treatment)
