Who is Milk of Magnesia Liquid Suitable For?

Milk of Magnesia Liquid is suitable for adults and children aged 3 years and over. It is ideal for those experiencing occasional constipation, acid indigestion, or heartburn. This gentle formula is particularly useful for individuals seeking a non-stimulant, osmotic laxative.

 

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

  • Active ingredient: Magnesium Hydroxide 415mg per 5ml
  • Other ingredients: Glycerin, sodium hypochlorite solution, purified water (formulation may vary slightly by flavour)

Milk of Magnesia works by drawing water into the bowel to soften stools and by neutralising stomach acid to relieve indigestion.

 

How to Use / Dosage Instructions

Dosage by age group:

  • Adults (including the elderly):
    • For constipation: 30ml to 45ml once daily, preferably at bedtime
    • For indigestion: 5ml to 10ml, up to four times a day
  • Children aged 3–12 years:
    • 5ml to 10ml once daily (constipation only)
  • Children under 3 years: Only under medical supervision

How often to take it:

  • For constipation, take once daily
  • For indigestion, take after meals and at bedtime, not exceeding four doses in 24 hours

How to administer:

  • Shake bottle well before use
  • Measure the liquid using a dosing cup or spoon
  • Can be taken with or without food

Duration of use:

  • For constipation, do not use for more than 3 consecutive days without medical advice
  • For indigestion, if symptoms persist beyond 2 weeks, consult a doctor

 

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects include:

  • Diarrhoea or loose stools
  • Abdominal cramps or bloating

Rare side effects may include:

  • Electrolyte imbalance (with prolonged use)
  • Nausea or flatulence
  • Allergic reactions (e.g. rash, itching)

If any side effects become troublesome or you notice anything unusual, stop using and seek medical advice.

 

Warnings and Precautions

  • Do not use if you are allergic to magnesium hydroxide or any other ingredient
  • Not suitable for people with severe kidney problems, bowel obstruction, or low magnesium tolerance
  • Avoid prolonged use without medical supervision

Pregnancy and breastfeeding:
Generally considered safe, but consult a pharmacist or GP before use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Driving or machinery:
Milk of Magnesia does not affect your ability to drive or use machines.

 

Interactions with Other Medicines

Milk of Magnesia can affect the absorption of certain medicines, including:

  • Antibiotics like tetracyclines or quinolones
  • Iron supplements
  • Certain antivirals and bisphosphonates

Leave at least 2 hours between taking Milk of Magnesia and other medications.
