What is Solvazinc 45mg Effervescent Tablets used for?

Solvazinc is a mineral supplement indicated for the treatment of zinc deficiency. Zinc is an essential trace element involved in multiple enzyme systems in the body. Because this is an effervescent format, you dissolve the tablet in water first, then swallow the solution.

 

Who is it suitable for?

  • Adults (dose as directed below).
  • Children (dose is based on body weight, as directed below).
  • Suitable when zinc deficiency has been diagnosed or suspected by a healthcare professional.

 

Ingredients / Active Ingredients (exact strength)

 

Active ingredient (per effervescent tablet):

  • Zinc 45mg (elemental zinc) equivalent to zinc sulfate monohydrate 125mg.

 

Other ingredients:

  • Sorbitol (E420) 115.5mg per tablet
  • Mannitol (E421)
  • Sodium hydrogen carbonate
  • Citric acid
  • Saccharin sodium
  • Povidone K25
  • Sodium citrate
  • Sodium carbonate (anhydrous)

 

Sodium content:

  • 106mg sodium per tablet (about 5.3% of the recommended maximum daily intake for an adult).

 

How to use / Dosage Instructions

 

How to take:

  • Oral use.
  • Dissolve the tablet in a glass of water, then swallow the solution.
  • Take after meals.

 

Adults:

  • 1 tablet once to 3 times daily after meals.

 

Children (by body weight):

  • More than 30kg: 1 tablet once to 3 times daily after meals.
  • 10–30kg: ½ tablet once to 3 times daily after meals.
  • Less than 10kg: ½ tablet once daily after a meal.

 

Duration of use:

  • Do not take Solvazinc longer than necessary. Your doctor/pharmacist will advise how long to continue.

 

Possible side effects (plain English)

Some people may get:

  • Stomach discomfort, abdominal pain, indigestion
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Headache
  • Irritability
  • Lethargy (feeling unusually tired)

 

Important (less common but clinically relevant):

  • Reduced copper levels which can lead to copper deficiency, especially if used for longer periods or at higher doses. Signs may include problems with balance/coordination, pins and needles/numbness, or changes in blood cell counts.

 

Warnings and precautions

  • Kidney disease: speak to a doctor/pharmacist before use (zinc can accumulate in renal impairment).
  • Sorbitol (E420): contains a source of fructose. If you have hereditary fructose intolerance or have been told you have a sugar intolerance, get medical advice first.
  • Sodium: consider total daily sodium intake, especially if you are on a restricted-salt diet.
  • Desiccant warning: each container cap includes a small desiccant capsule. Do not swallow it.

 

Contraindications

Do not take Solvazinc if:

  • You are allergic to zinc sulfate monohydrate or any ingredient listed above.
  • You have copper deficiency.

 

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

  • Safety in human pregnancy is not known.
  • Zinc crosses the placenta and is present in breast milk in people taking supplements.
  • Use only if your doctor advises during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

 

Driving and machinery

  • Solvazinc is not expected to affect driving or using machines.

 

Interactions with other medicines

Tell your pharmacist/doctor if you take (or recently took):

  • Tetracycline antibiotics (e.g., doxycycline, oxytetracycline)
  • Quinolone antibiotics (e.g., ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, norfloxacin, ofloxacin)
  • Calcium salts
  • Iron preparations
  • Penicillamine
  • Trientine
  • Copper supplements (and do not use if you have copper deficiency)

 

(These can reduce absorption or require spacing out doses.)

 

When to consult a pharmacist or doctor

  • If you do not feel better, or you feel worse.
  • If you think you may have taken too many tablets (seek urgent medical advice).
  • If you develop signs of an allergic reaction (swelling, wheeze, severe rash).
  • If you need zinc long-term and develop symptoms suggestive of copper deficiency.

 

Red flags (get medical advice urgently)

  • Severe or persistent vomiting/diarrhoea
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • New problems with balance/coordination, marked numbness/tingling
  • Suspected overdose

 

Storage

  • Keep out of sight and reach of children.
  • Store below 25°C.
  • Keep in the original packaging to protect from moisture.
  • Do not use after the expiry date.
  • Do not use if the pack or tablets look damaged.

Can I take Solvazinc on an empty stomach?
It should be taken after meals to improve tolerability.

Do I swallow the tablet whole?
