How to prepare SMA Anti-Reflux (step-by-step)

This product is made under strict hygienic conditions but it is not sterile. Following preparation instructions helps reduce the risk of illness.

  1. Wash hands and sterilise bottles, teats and utensils.
  2. Boil 1 litre of fresh tap water, then cool for no more than 30 minutes.
  3. Measure the required water into a sterilised bottle (water is hot).
    • Do not use artificially softened or repeatedly boiled water.
  4. Fit a fast-flow teat and cool the bottle under cold running water until lukewarm.
  5. Using only the scoop provided, add the correct number of level scoops (level with the back of a clean, dry knife).
  6. Refit teat and cap, then shake vigorously: 5 seconds forward/back, then 10 seconds up/down until dissolved.
  7. Test temperature on your wrist (should feel lukewarm) and feed immediately.

Because it is a thicker formula, it usually needs a fast-flow teat.

Feeding guide (quick-use essentials)

  • Mixing ratio: 1 level scoop per 30 ml water.
  • Scoop size: 1 scoop = 4.4 g.
  • Prepare feeds fresh when needed and, for hygiene, discard unfinished feed as soon as possible.
  • Do not add extra powder or water and do not press powder into the scoop.

Duration of use

Use for as long as advised by your healthcare professional. It can be used as the sole source of nutrition from birth and throughout infancy (within the product’s stated age range).

Possible side effects

  • Change in stool/poo is common when switching to SMA Anti-Reflux. This is expected and usually settles.
  • Occasionally, babies may have wind, constipation, or looser stools during a change of formula (this varies baby to baby).
  • Allergic reactions are uncommon but possible (e.g., rash, swelling, breathing difficulty).

Stop use and seek urgent help if you suspect an allergic reaction.

Warnings and precautions

  • Use under medical supervision.
  • Do not use with other feed thickeners or antacids.
  • Do not alter or add anything unless medically directed.
  • Do not warm feeds in a microwave (hot spots and thickening can occur).
  • Cows’ milk should not be used as a drink during the first year.

Interactions with other products/medicines

  • Avoid combining with other thickening agents and infant antacid/thickener products unless specifically advised by a clinician.
  • If your baby is prescribed medicines, tell your prescriber you are using a thickened anti-reflux formula.

When to consult a pharmacist or doctor

Get medical advice if reflux is frequent, distressing, or not improving. Seek urgent medical help if your baby has any red flags such as:

  • Vomit that is green (bile), blood-stained, or persistent projectile vomiting
  • Poor feeding, poor weight gain, dehydration signs (fewer wet nappies, sleepy/unresponsive)
  • Breathing difficulties, persistent cough/choking with feeds
  • Fever, severe irritability, or you are worried something is not right

How to store

  • Store in a cool, dry place.
  • Keep the lid tightly closed and store the scoop as directed in the can.
  • Use within 4 weeks of opening.
  • Keep out of sight and reach of children.

FAQs

Can I switch from my usual formula straight to SMA Anti-Reflux?
Yes, it can replace your usual formula, but because it is a Food for Special Medical Purposes, it should be used under medical supervision, especially if symptoms are significant.

Do I need a different teat?
Usually, yes. Since it’s a thicker anti reflux baby milk, a fast-flow teat is commonly needed.

Why has my baby’s poo changed?
A stool change is common when switching to SMA Anti-Reflux because the ingredients and thickness differ from standard formula.

Can I batch-prepare bottles for the day?
It’s recommended to prepare each feed fresh when needed. Unfinished feeds should be discarded promptly for hygiene.

Can I add SMA Anti-Reflux to foods after weaning?
Yes, prepared formula can be added to foods, but it should not be heated.
