Who is it Suitable For?
Benylin Children’s Chesty Coughs 6+ Years is medicine is for children aged 6 to 12 years who are suffering from a chesty (productive) cough associated with mucus build-up.
Not suitable for children under 6 years. Adults and adolescents over 12 should use alternative products.
Ingredients / Active Ingredients
- Active ingredient: Guaifenesin 50 mg per 5 ml (an expectorant that loosens mucus).
- Other ingredients: Glycerol, sorbitol liquid (E420), carmellose sodium, sodium citrate, sodium saccharin, sodium benzoate (E211), citric acid monohydrate, strawberry flavour (contains benzyl alcohol), and purified water.
How to Use / Dosage Instructions
- Age 6–12 years: Two 5 ml spoonfuls up to four times daily.
- Do not give more than 4 doses in 24 hours.
- Do not give for more than 5 days without medical advice.
- Under 6 years: Not recommended.
- Administration: Oral syrup, measure carefully using a medicine spoon or cup.
Possible Side Effects
Like all medicines, side effects are possible but not everyone gets them.
- Common: Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea.
- Allergic reactions (rare): Rash, itching, hives, swelling, or severe skin reactions (blistering/peeling).
Seek urgent medical advice if your child shows signs of an allergic reaction.
Warnings and Precautions
- Do not use if your child has ever had an allergic reaction to guaifenesin or any ingredients.
- Do not give with other cough or cold medicines.
- Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before use if your child:
- Has liver or kidney problems
- Has asthma or a persistent cough producing a lot of mucus
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Not relevant to children, but adults should only use under medical advice.
- Driving or machinery: Not applicable in the intended age group.
Interactions with Other Medicines
- Do not give with other cough and cold medicines.
- Tell your pharmacist or doctor if your child is taking any prescribed medication before starting.
When to Consult a Pharmacist or Doctor
Seek medical advice if:
- Your child’s cough persists for more than 5 days
- The cough is accompanied by a high temperature, rash, or persistent headache
- Symptoms worsen or new symptoms develop
- Breathing difficulties occur
Storage Information
- Store below 25°C in the original packaging.
- Discard 4 months after opening, even if some syrup remains.
- Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
- Do not use after the expiry date on the packaging.

Yes, but only if prescribed. Always check with a doctor or pharmacist first. - Does it make children sleepy?
No, guaifenesin is not a sedative. It works by loosening mucus. - Can it be given at night?
Yes, but as it helps loosen mucus, some children may cough more as their chest clears. - Can I mix it with juice?
