Description
Who is it Suitable For?
- Adults and children aged 6 years and over.
- For spasms of the stomach, bowel, bladder or urinary tract.
- Also suitable for symptomatic relief of IBS abdominal pain (see dosing below).
Ingredients / Active Ingredients
- Active: Hyoscine butylbromide.
- Inactive (excipients): Calcium hydrogen phosphate, maize starch, silica colloidal anhydrous, tartaric acid, stearic acid, povidone, sucrose, talc, acacia powdered, titanium dioxide, macrogol 6000, white beeswax, carnauba wax.
How to Use / Dosage Instructions
Route: Oral administration. Swallow tablets whole with water; do not chew.
Dosage by age group
- Children 6–12 years: 1 tablet three times daily.
- Adults and children 12+ years: 2 tablets four times daily.
IBS symptomatic relief (adults and 12+):
- Start with 1 tablet three times daily; if needed, increase up to 2 tablets four times daily.
Duration of use:
- Do not take continuously for more than 2 weeks without medical advice. If new symptoms develop, symptoms worsen, or do not improve within 2 weeks, seek advice.
Possible Side Effects
Most people tolerate this medicine well; however:
- Common: Dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision.
- Uncommon/Rare: Skin rash or itching, mild allergic reactions.
- Very rare/Serious: Fast heartbeat, difficulty urinating, severe allergic reaction (swelling of face, lips, tongue or throat).
Stop use and seek urgent medical help if you develop breathing difficulty or facial swelling.
Warnings and Precautions
- Do not take if you are pregnant, likely to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
- Not recommended under 6 years.
- Do not use if allergic to hyoscine butylbromide or any ingredient.
- Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before use if you have: glaucoma, myasthenia gravis, enlarged prostate, bowel obstruction/ileus, severe constipation, megacolon, fast/irregular heartbeat, or any unexplained abdominal pain.
- Driving and machinery: May cause blurred vision; do not drive or operate machinery until effects are known.
Interactions with Other Medicines
- Effects may be increased with other anticholinergic medicines (e.g., some antihistamines, tricyclic antidepressants, antipsychotics).
- Prokinetic agents (e.g., metoclopramide, domperidone) may have reduced effect when used together.
- Always check with a pharmacist if you take other medicines or have chronic conditions.
When to Consult a Pharmacist or Doctor
Seek advice promptly if:
- You are over 40 and develop new or changed abdominal pain.
- Pain is severe or persistent, or occurs with fever, nausea/vomiting.
- You notice blood in stools, unintentional weight loss, persistent constipation/diarrhoea, bloating that does not resolve, or difficulty urinating.
- Symptoms worsen or fail to improve within 2 weeks.
Storage Information
- Store in the original packaging, below 25°C, away from moisture and heat.
- Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
- Do not use after the expiry date on the pack.
FAQs
1) How fast does it work?
Relief commonly starts within 15 minutes as the antispasmodic action relaxes smooth muscle.
2) Can I take it with paracetamol or ibuprofen?
Yes, it’s generally fine; however, check with your pharmacist if you have other conditions or take regular medicines.
3) Can I drink alcohol while taking it?
Alcohol has no direct interaction but may worsen abdominal symptoms in some people.
4) Can I crush or chew the tablets?
No. Swallow whole with water for correct release and effect.
5) What if I miss a dose?
Take the next dose when needed. Do not double up to make up for a missed dose.
