Description
Who is it Suitable For?
- Adults aged 16 to 60 years diagnosed with vaginal thrush.
- Not suitable for children or men unless prescribed by a healthcare professional.
- Suitable for women who have had thrush previously and recognise the symptoms.
Ingredients / Active Ingredients
- Fluconazole 150mg – an antifungal medicine that works by eliminating Candida, the yeast responsible for thrush.
- Other inactive ingredients include lactose monohydrate, maize starch, magnesium stearate, silica, gelatin, titanium dioxide (E171), and sodium lauryl sulphate.
How to Use / Dosage Instructions
- Adults aged 16–60 years: Take one capsule orally as a single dose with water.
- The capsule can be taken with or without food.
- Do not exceed the recommended dose.
- Relief is usually noticeable within 24 hours, with full symptom resolution within a few days.
- If symptoms persist beyond 7 days, seek medical advice.
Possible Side Effects
Most people tolerate Canesten Oral Capsule well. However, side effects may include:
- Common: Headache, stomach discomfort, diarrhoea, nausea.
- Uncommon: Rash, vomiting, flatulence.
- Rare but serious: Severe allergic reaction (swelling of face/lips/tongue, difficulty breathing), liver problems, or severe skin reactions.
Stop taking and seek immediate medical attention if serious side effects occur.
Warnings and Precautions
- Do not use if you are allergic to fluconazole, other azole antifungals, or any ingredients.
- Not suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding without consulting your GP.
- Speak to a doctor before use if you have liver or kidney disease, heart rhythm problems, or other serious medical conditions.
- Do not take if under 16 years or over 60 years unless prescribed.
Pregnancy/Breastfeeding: Fluconazole should generally be avoided in pregnancy unless prescribed. Small amounts may pass into breast milk; check with your doctor first.
Driving/Machinery: May cause dizziness; avoid driving or operating machinery if affected.
Interactions with Other Medicines
Fluconazole may interact with:
- Warfarin or other blood thinners
- Certain antihistamines (terfenadine, astemizole)
- Medicines for diabetes (sulphonylureas)
- Phenytoin, rifampicin, ciclosporin, statins, and some antidepressants
Always check with a pharmacist or doctor if you are taking other medicines.
