What is Covonia Chesty Cough Mixture Mentholated?

Covonia Chesty Cough Mixture Mentholated is a traditional expectorant cough medicine used to relieve productive (chesty) coughs and associated throat irritation. It works by helping to loosen and clear mucus from the chest while menthol provides a soothing, cooling effect to ease congestion.

This non-drowsy liquid formula is suitable for adults, the elderly and children over 5 years, helping you get on with daily life while managing chesty cough symptoms.

Active Ingredients (per 5ml)

  • Levomenthol 4mg
  • Squill tincture 0.6ml
  • Liquorice liquid extract 0.125ml

 

Other Ingredients

Peppermint oil, anise oil, capsicum tincture (capsicum oleoresin, ethanol), sucrose syrup, liquid glucose, magnesium aluminium silicate, sodium methyl, ethyl and propyl parahydroxybenzoates (E215, E217, E219), glycerol (E422), caramel (E150c), purified water.

 

How to Use / Dosage Instructions

Adults, elderly and children over 12 years:

  • One or two 5ml spoonfuls

Children 5–12 years:

  • One 5ml spoonful

 

How often to take it

  • Every 4 hours if required
  • Do not exceed the stated dose

 

How to administer

  • Oral liquid
  • Measure doses carefully using a medicine spoon

 

Duration of Use

  • Short-term use only
  • If symptoms persist for more than a few days or worsen, seek medical advice

 

Possible Side Effects

Like all medicines, this product can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.

Possible side effects include:

  • Allergic reactions such as rash, itching, flushing or dermatitis
  • Stomach upset, including abdominal pain, vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Fluid retention or raised sodium levels
  • Low potassium levels, which may cause muscle weakness, confusion or irregular heartbeat

Pre-1960s

Covonia Bronchial Balsam was initially formulated and produced by Huddersfield chemist, S.T. Shaw. As sales increased, Mr Shaw contracted Thornton & Ross to produce Covonia

1968

Covonia, now owned by Thornton & Ross, is first licensed under the Medicines Act to start selling cough and cold remedies. The nation starts to Feel the Power of Covonia

1970s – 1990s

1997
