Gaviscon Advance Liquid Suspension provides fast, soothing relief from heartburn and acid reflux. Forming a protective barrier on top of stomach contents, it prevents acid rising into the oesophagus. Suitable for adults, including during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Who is it Suitable For?

  • Adults and children aged 12 years and over.
  • Safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, provided taken as directed.
  • Not generally recommended for children under 12 unless advised by a doctor.

 

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

Each 10ml dose contains:

  • Sodium alginate 1000mg
  • Potassium hydrogen carbonate 200mg

Other ingredients include: calcium carbonate, carbomer, methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218), propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216), sodium saccharin, peppermint flavour, sodium hydroxide, purified water.

 

How to Use / Dosage Instructions

Dosage by age group:

  • Adults and children over 12 years: 5–10ml after meals and at bedtime, up to four times a day.
  • Children under 12: Only on medical advice.

How to administer:

  • Oral liquid. Shake the bottle well before use. Measure the dose accurately using a spoon or dosing cup.

Duration of use:

  • Use for short-term relief. If symptoms persist beyond 7 days, consult your doctor.

 

Possible Side Effects

Most people do not experience side effects. Rarely:

  • Allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling, difficulty breathing).
  • Stomach cramps or nausea.
  • Very rare electrolyte imbalances with prolonged high-dose use.

Seek medical help if you experience any signs of an allergic reaction.

 

Warnings and Precautions

  • Do not use if allergic to sodium alginate, potassium hydrogen carbonate, or any listed ingredients.
  • Contains sodium and potassium — talk to your doctor if you have heart disease, kidney problems, or are on a salt-restricted diet.
  • Check suitability if you have difficulty urinating due to enlarged prostate or other urinary retention issues.

Pregnancy & breastfeeding:

  • Safe to use when necessary. Always take the lowest effective dose.

Driving & machinery:

  • No known effects.

 

Interactions with Other Medicines

  • May affect absorption of some medicines, including antibiotics (e.g. tetracyclines), thyroid hormones (levothyroxine), and iron supplements.
  • Allow at least 2 hours between taking Gaviscon and other oral medicines.

 

When to Consult a Pharmacist or Doctor

  • If you have persistent or severe symptoms.
  • If you experience difficulty swallowing, unintentional weight loss, or vomiting blood.
  • If symptoms continue beyond 7 days despite treatment.

 

Storage Information

  • Store below 30°C.
  • Do not refrigerate or freeze.
  • Keep bottle tightly closed and out of sight and reach of children.
  • Discard after expiry date shown on the packaging.
