What is Germolene Antiseptic Cream?

Germolene Antiseptic Cream is a dual-action topical treatment designed to help prevent infection and relieve pain from minor skin injuries. It contains both an antiseptic and a local anaesthetic, offering effective protection and soothing comfort for everyday skin irritations, cuts and scrapes.

 

Who is it suitable for?

  • Suitable for adults and children.
  • Do not use on infants under 1 year old unless directed by a healthcare professional.

 

Active Ingredients (per 100g)

  • Phenol (carbolic acid) – 1.2% w/w (antiseptic and local anaesthetic)
  • Chlorhexidine digluconate – 0.25% w/w (antiseptic to prevent infection)

Other Ingredients:
Macrogol stearate, cetostearyl alcohol, liquid paraffin, white soft paraffin, anhydrous monobasic sodium phosphate, purified water, and perfume (contains benzyl alcohol and linalool).

 

How to Use / Dosage Instructions

  • Apply a thin layer of Germolene Antiseptic Cream directly to the affected area.
  • Gently rub it in, or if preferred, cover with a clean dressing.
  • Use once or twice daily, as required.
  • For external use only.

 

Duration of Use

Use for short-term treatment of minor wounds. If symptoms persist for more than a few days or worsen, seek medical advice.

 

Possible Side Effects

Most people experience no side effects. Rarely, users may notice:

  • Mild skin irritation or temporary redness.
  • Allergic reactions such as rash, itching or swelling (very rare).

Stop using immediately and consult a doctor or pharmacist if irritation or an allergic reaction occurs.

 

Warnings and Precautions

  • Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and deep wounds.
  • Do not use on large or severe burns, or on eczema-affected areas.
  • Keep away from the nose and mouth of infants and young children.
  • Contains cetostearyl alcohol which may cause local skin reactions.

 

Contraindications

  • Do not use if allergic to phenol, chlorhexidine, or any listed ingredient.
  • Avoid if you have previously reacted to antiseptics or anaesthetics.

 

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

There is limited data on use in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using.

 

Driving and Machinery

No known effects on ability to drive or use machines.

 

Interactions with Other Medicines

Avoid using other topical antiseptics or creams containing chlorhexidine or phenol on the same area, as this may reduce effectiveness or cause skin irritation.

  • If the wound shows signs of infection (redness, swelling, pus).
  • If symptoms persist after several days.
  • If your child accidentally swallows any cream.
  • If there is extensive skin damage or severe burns.

 

Storage

  • Store below 25°C in a dry place.
  • Keep the tube tightly closed.
  • Keep out of sight and reach of children.
  • Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack.
