What is Nurofen for Children Double Strength Oral Suspension?

Nurofen for Children 7–12 Years Double Strength Oral Suspension is a strawberry-flavoured liquid containing ibuprofen 200mg per 5ml. This anti-inflammatory medicine helps reduce fever, relieve pain and ease symptoms of cold and flu.

It starts to work in around 15 minutes and can provide relief for up to 8 hours. Because it is double strength, it allows accurate dosing for older children while keeping volumes manageable.

This product is for short-term use only.

 

Who is it suitable for?

  • Children aged 7–12 years
  • Children weighing 20kg or more

Not suitable for children under 7 years or under 20kg.

 

Active Ingredient

  • Ibuprofen 200mg per 5ml oral suspension

Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic properties.

 

Other Ingredients

Contains maltitol liquid, sodium and wheat starch. See leaflet for full excipient list.

Contains maltitol (not suitable for children with fructose intolerance). Contains wheat starch.

 

What is it used for?

  • Fever (including post-immunisation fever)
  • Headache
  • Toothache
  • Sore throat
  • Cold and flu symptoms
  • Minor aches and pains
  • Muscular pain

Because it contains ibuprofen, it also helps reduce inflammation.

 

How to Use / Dosage Instructions

For oral and short-term use only.

Shake the bottle well before use. Use the supplied measuring spoon for accuracy.

7–9 years:
5ml three times in 24 hours

10–12 years:
7.5ml three times in 24 hours

  • Leave 6–8 hours between doses
  • Leave at least 4 hours between doses
  • Do not exceed 3 doses in 24 hours
  • Do not use for more than 3 days unless advised by a doctor

Can be taken with or without food.

 

Duration of Use

Short-term use only.

If symptoms worsen or persist beyond 3 days, seek medical advice.

 

Possible Side Effects

Like all NSAIDs, side effects are possible, although not everyone gets them.

Common (may affect up to 1 in 10):

  • Stomach pain
  • Indigestion
  • Nausea

Less common or rare:

  • Stomach ulcer or bleeding
  • Allergic reactions (rash, swelling, wheezing)
  • Worsening asthma
  • Severe skin reactions

Stop giving the medicine and seek urgent medical help if your child develops difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, black stools, vomiting blood or a severe rash.

 

Do NOT Give This Product If Your Child:

  • Is under 7 years or weighs under 20kg
  • Is allergic to ibuprofen, aspirin or other NSAIDs
  • Is taking other NSAIDs or aspirin above 75mg daily
  • Has (or has had) stomach ulcers, bleeding or perforation
  • Has severe liver, kidney or heart failure
  • Has active bleeding
  • Has severe dehydration
  • Has fructose intolerance

 

Speak to a Doctor or Pharmacist Before Use If Your Child:

  • Has asthma
  • Has diabetes
  • Has high blood pressure or high cholesterol
  • Has heart, liver, kidney or bowel problems
  • Has previously had a stroke
  • Has chickenpox
  • Is dehydrated

 

Interactions with Other Medicines

Do not use with:

  • Other NSAIDs
  • Aspirin (above 75mg daily)

Speak to a healthcare professional if your child takes:

  • Steroids
  • Anticoagulants
  • Diuretics
  • Blood pressure medicines
  • Methotrexate

 

Pregnancy / Breastfeeding

Not applicable to the intended age group. However, ibuprofen should not be used in the last 3 months of pregnancy.

 

Driving and Machinery

Not applicable.

 

When to Seek Medical Advice

Seek urgent help if your child develops:

  • Severe stomach pain
  • Vomiting blood
  • Black or tarry stools
  • Severe allergic reaction
  • Breathing difficulty
  • Signs of dehydration

Consult a doctor if fever lasts more than 3 days.

  • Store below 25°C
  • Keep out of the sight and reach of children
  • Replace cap securely after use

 

FAQs

Can this be given after school vaccinations?
Yes, it may be used for fever or pain unless otherwise advised by a healthcare professional.

Is this the same as standard Nurofen for Children?
No. This is double strength (200mg per 5ml), designed for older children aged 7–12 years.

Can I alternate it with paracetamol?
This may be possible in certain situations, but seek pharmacist advice first.

Does it contain sugar?
It contains maltitol liquid, not sucrose.

Can it be given on an empty stomach?
Yes, it can be taken with or without food, although giving with food may reduce stomach upset.
