Description
Who is it Suitable For?
Piriton Syrup is suitable for children aged 1 year and over and adults, including the elderly. It is intended for those experiencing symptoms caused by allergies, such as hay fever, insect stings, pet allergies, and food allergies. It is not suitable for children under 12 months old.
Ingredients / Active Ingredients
Active ingredient:
- Chlorphenamine maleate – 2mg per 5ml (antihistamine)
Other ingredients:
- Sucrose, glycerol, ethanol, water, and other standard excipients. Please refer to the patient leaflet for the complete list.
How to Use / Dosage Instructions
Dosage by age group:
- Children aged 1–2 years: 2.5ml twice daily (Max: 5ml per day)
- Children aged 2–6 years: 2.5ml every 4–6 hours (Max: 15ml per day)
- Children aged 6–12 years: 5ml every 4–6 hours (Max: 30ml per day)
- Children over 12 & adults: 10ml every 4–6 hours (Max: 60ml per day)
- Adults over 65 years: 10ml every 4–6 hours (Max: 30ml per day)
Administration method:
- Oral liquid. Use a medicine spoon or oral syringe to ensure accurate dosing.
Duration of use:
- Do not use for more than 14 consecutive days without medical advice.
Possible Side Effects
Common side effects include:
- Drowsiness or tiredness
- Dizziness or poor coordination
- Headache
- Blurred vision
- Dry mouth
- Feeling sick or vomiting
Serious side effects (seek immediate help):
- Allergic reactions: swelling of the face/throat, difficulty breathing, skin rash, or loss of consciousness
Warnings and Precautions
Do not use if:
- You are allergic to chlorphenamine or any of the ingredients
- Your child is under 12 months old
- You are currently taking other antihistamines or MAOIs (for depression) in the last 2 weeks
Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before use if you:
- Have high blood pressure or heart disease
- Have liver, kidney or thyroid problems
- Suffer from asthma, bronchitis or other breathing disorders
- Have epilepsy, glaucoma, an enlarged prostate, or ulcers
- Are intolerant to certain sugars

This product is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless advised by a doctor. Always seek medical advice before use.
Driving or Machinery Warnings
Piriton Syrup may cause drowsiness or slowed reactions. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you.
Interactions with Other Medicines
Avoid using with:
- MAOIs (within the last 14 days)
- Other sedating medications, including those for sleep or anxiety
- Phenytoin or similar epilepsy medicines
Always consult a pharmacist or doctor if you are taking any prescription or over-the-counter medication.

Seek professional advice if:
- Symptoms worsen or do not improve
- You develop new or unexplained symptoms
- You or your child accidentally exceed the stated dose

Storage Information
- Store below 25°C in a dry place
- Keep tightly closed and out of sight and reach of children
- Do not use after the expiry date (last day of the month printed)
- Return unused medicine to a pharmacy for safe disposal
