Who is Polytar Medicated Scalp Shampoo Suitable For?

Polytar is suitable for adults and children aged 12 years and over who suffer from chronic or recurring scalp conditions such as:

  • Dandruff
  • Seborrhoeic dermatitis
  • Psoriasis
  • Scalp eczema

It is not suitable for children under 12 or for use on broken or infected skin.

 

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

Active Ingredient:

  • Coal Tar Solution 4% (w/w): A natural therapeutic agent with anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antipruritic, and keratolytic properties. It slows excessive skin cell production, reduces itching and irritation, and promotes healthy scalp turnover.

Other Ingredients:
Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Disodium Phosphate Dihydrate, Citric Acid Monohydrate, Benzyl Alcohol, Macrogol 150 Distearate, Hexylene Glycol, Oleyl Alcohol, Polyquaternium-10, Fragrance oil (contains multiple perfume allergens – see full ingredients list on packaging), and Purified Water.

 

How to Use / Dosage Instructions

Dosage by age group:

  • Adults and children aged 12 and over: Use once or twice a week.

How often to use:

  • Apply 1–2 times weekly. Overuse may increase sensitivity or dryness.

How to administer:

  • Wet hair thoroughly.
  • Apply enough shampoo to create a rich lather.
  • Gently massage into the scalp using fingertips.
  • Leave on for 3–5 minutes.
  • Rinse well and repeat the process.

Duration of use:

  • Use as needed to manage symptoms. If no improvement is seen within 4 weeks, consult a GP or pharmacist.

 

Possible Side Effects

Most people tolerate Polytar well, but side effects can occur, including:

  • Mild scalp irritation or dryness
  • Temporary discolouration of light-coloured hair
  • Increased sun sensitivity
  • Rare allergic reactions (redness, swelling, itching)

Discontinue use if severe irritation or an allergic reaction occurs.

 

Warnings and Precautions

Do not use if:

  • You are allergic to coal tar or any other listed ingredient
  • You have open wounds, infected skin, or pus-filled blisters
  • You are under 12 years old

Use with caution if:

  • You have sensitive or broken skin
  • The product contacts your eyes (rinse immediately)
  • You are exposed to sunlight or sunbeds, as coal tar increases photosensitivity
  • The shampoo touches clothing or bedding, as it may stain and increase flammability

Advice for Pregnancy / Breastfeeding

  • Do not use during the first trimester of pregnancy.
  • Speak to your GP or pharmacist before using if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Driving or Machinery

Polytar has no known effects on your ability to drive or operate machinery.

FAQs

Can I use Polytar alongside my regular shampoo?
Yes, you may alternate between Polytar and your regular shampoo. Use Polytar only 1–2 times per week.

Does Polytar affect coloured or treated hair?
Polytar is generally safe for colour-treated hair, but it may cause slight temporary darkening in light shades. A patch test is recommended.

Is the smell of coal tar permanent?
Polytar has a strong medicinal scent, but it fades after rinsing and drying.
