Who is it Suitable For?
Sominex is suitable for adults and adolescents aged 16 years and over who are experiencing temporary sleep difficulties. It is intended for short-term use only.
Ingredients / Active Ingredients
- Promethazine hydrochloride 20mg – an antihistamine with sedative properties that helps you fall asleep.
- Other ingredients: Lactose, maize starch, magnesium stearate, and colouring agents.
How to Use / Dosage Instructions
Dosage by age group:
- Adults and adolescents aged 16 years and over: Take one tablet about 20 minutes before bedtime.
How often to take it:
- Once daily at night.
How to administer:
- Swallow whole with water. Do not chew.
Duration of use:
- Use for a maximum of 7 consecutive nights. If sleep problems persist, consult a doctor.
Possible Side Effects
Common:
- Drowsiness the next day, dizziness, dry mouth, blurred vision.
Rare:
- Confusion, low blood pressure, allergic skin reactions, restlessness.
Seek urgent help if you develop difficulty breathing, facial swelling, or a severe rash.
Warnings and Precautions
- Do not use if you are allergic to promethazine or any of the ingredients.
- Not suitable for children under 16.
- Avoid alcohol while taking Sominex.
- Speak to your doctor before use if you:
- Have asthma, bronchitis, or other breathing problems
- Have glaucoma or epilepsy
- Have an enlarged prostate or urinary retention
- Have liver or kidney problems
Pregnancy and breastfeeding:
- Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless advised by a doctor.
Driving and using machines:
- May cause persistent drowsiness the next day. Do not drive or operate machinery until fully alert.
Interactions with Other Medicines
- May interact with sedatives, tranquillisers, strong painkillers, antidepressants, or other antihistamines.
- Check with a pharmacist if taking any other medication.
When to Consult a Pharmacist or Doctor
- If symptoms persist beyond 7 nights
- If you develop confusion, hallucinations, or severe dizziness
- If you experience breathing problems during sleep
